Denny Heck Stands up to Attacks on Postal Service, Vote-by-Mail

Heck: “For Washington, this fight is personal”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEATTLE, WA- Today, Congressman and Candidate for Lt. Governor Denny Heck appeared with State Rep. and Candidate for Secretary of State Gael Tarleton, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and King County Executive Dow Constantine calling for an end to President Trump’s politically-motivated sabotage of the United States Postal Service.

“The President’s sabotage of the Postal Service is an attack on the millions across our state who rely on this cherished institution each and every day,” said Heck. “On the veterans in our state who receive their medications from the VA in the mail. On the seniors checking the mailbox as they wait for their Social Security check to arrive. And on every Washingtonian who has ever exercised their sacred right to vote. For Washington, this fight is personal.”

“The conference  in Seattle came as a sharp rebuke to President Trump’s plans to “to undermine the agency ahead of the election”. Yesterday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she is calling the House back into session to vote on legislation designed to limit official changes to the agency ahead of November’s election. Rep Heck fully supports the legislation to protect USPS and intends to vote in favor of the bill.”

“I stand with Postal workers across our state and nation. I know their grit firsthand—my grandfather began working for the Postal Service near the turn of the 20th century. He delivered parcels through ‘snow, rain, heat, and gloom of night’ for nearly forty years. The men and women of the Postal Service represent the best of America, and their fight is my fight.”

“The House must reconvene as soon as possible, and move to prevent the Postal Service and Postmaster DeJoy from implementing further delays and service reductions before the election. During this devastating pandemic, it is more important than ever that we shield the Postal Service from political interference and protect every Washingtonian’s right to access the ballot box safely this November. Our public health and very democracy is at stake.”

“Washington state has lead the way in vote-by-mail, setting the standard for safe and fair elections that are accessible to all […] These attacks put our very democracy at stake, and as the next Lt. Gov, I will fight to protect every Washingtonian’s right to vote.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Heck has been a stalwart champion of the Postal Service. Heck has voted to provide robust aid to the Postal Service during the pandemic, and joined 190 of his colleagues in demanding Postmaster DeJoy provide answers on unacceptable degradation of service.
